Time for the yearly video about Parkinson’s disease. This one is about the NHS postcode lottery for whether you have to pay for your meds or not. Jonny Acheson organised and created the video asnd says it better than me, Well done Jonny:
“NHS prescriptions in the UK is a lottery. England is the only UK country where prescription charges still exist, having been abolished in Wales in 2007, Northern Ireland in 2010 and Scotland in 2011. The prescription charge exemption list which was drawn up in 1968 is outdated and long overdue a review which takes into consideration the burden of treatment experienced by people with long-term conditions in England. In 1968 we presume the government at the time didn’t include Parkinson’s as the thinking was this was a condition that affected older men who were under 60.
When the Movers and Shakers visited the Health Secretary in 2024 the Department of Health did not know how many people in the UK were living with Parkinson’s never mind how many had Young Onset Parkinson’s. It is not right that people are paying to stay well due to the requirement of medication which means they incur additional costs because of their health condition. As Parkinson’s medication is Time Critical it is time for the governement to recognise this and do the right thing and abolish the charge for everyone with Parkinson’s. YouGov polling on prescription charges in May 2024 shows that almost 90% of the British public think there shouldn’t be a charge for prescriptions for anyone.
