The Frustration of Reduction Lino Printing and it’s impressive results – A Tutorial.

This part blog and mostly Lino print tutorial.

Reduction printing is a way of making lino prints with colour. You start with your print and use a light colour. Then carve out some of the details and use a darker colour and print again in the same place. By doing this you can build up an image that is multicoloured. see below for an example:

The trick is to have a jig to hold the picture in the same place so that the lino always end up in the same place. You can do it by eye but the results are variable and there is a lots of wastage. Below is an early attempt of mine which was done by eye. This was the best of 15 attempts and frustratingly not great.

Lino print Registration techniques:

Lino print registration devices can be used to line up the images. Some people make their own jigs or registration board to hold the paper and the lino cut in the same place. Another Lino print registration device you can buy are Ternes Burton hooks. I use a combination of both. Which you can see in the video below:
